Matt Hill, Ph.D

Matthew Hill is a Professor in the Departments of Cell Biology and Anatomy and Psychiatry at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary, the inaugural Chair of the Mental Health Initiative in Stress and Trauma and the Deputy Director of the Mathison Centre for Mental Health Research and Education. Dr. Hill is also the Executive Director for the Canadian Consortium for the Investigation of Cannabinoids and the past Chair of the Gordon Research Conference on Cannabinoids in the CNS and past President of the International Cannabinoid Research Society.


Dr. Hill’s research has primarily focused on endocannabinoid signaling, its dynamic regulation by stress and how it modulates neural circuits governing stress, fear and anxiety. More recently, his lab has begun to investigate the impacts of developmental exposure to cannabis using novel vapor-delivery technology for rodents. He has published over 160 scientific papers in the field, sits on numerous editorial boards for several scientific journals, including as an Associate Editor at both eLife and Neuropsychopharmacology, and regularly consults for both industry and governmental agencies. Dr. Hill has been the recipient of the Young Investigator of the year award from the Canadian Association for Neuroscience (2016), International Association for Cannabis Medicines (2017) and the International Cannabinoid Research Society (2018) and has been elected as a Member in the Royal Society of Canada College of Young Scholars. Dr. Hill has regular engagement with the media and has been featured in the New Yorker, New York Times, Scientific American, Vice News, Rolling Stone, CBC News and Radio as well as in documentaries on cannabis produced by PBS/NOVA and CBC.
